Global Engagement
More than ever, in an age of global interdependence, the United States must think in new ways and work with other countries as we confront the most pressing challenges of our time - from climate change to poverty to terrorism. This engagement abroad should be guided by the same values that Americans embrace at home: inclusive democracy, shared prosperity, and the fervent belief in the dignity of all human beings.
Demos is working to develop a new generation of policy ideas to guide responsible U.S. engagement in an interdependent world. Global institutions forged in the post-World War II era must be reimagined or replaced, along with policy approaches predicated on U.S. global dominance. The ideals of democracy, historically confined to the nation state, must be adapted to an era where global forces increasingly impact our individual lives. Fresh ways must be found to engage the American public in global policy issues to ensure not just that Americans support strong U.S. engagement in the world, but also that the public demands that this engagement be guided by the core democratic values that underpin our society at home.
The International Program at Demos is focusing its work in four areas: interdependence and global governance, international environmental policy, trade and geo-economic strategy, and framing and public opinion. We welcome new partners and collaborators in all our work.
